A parent reminded us that it would be a good idea to reiterate the mailing guidelines to The Great Ohio Columbus Mission so I have copied the letter that was sent to you when your missionary first received his/her call. Additionally, if you are sending mail of any sort to the office for Christmas, please be advised to send it so it arrives before Dec. 9 as we will need to sort it and get it delivered to your missionary at our Christmas Devotionals which will be held on Dec. 12 and 13. Thank you!
Here is the guideline:
We know that you will be emailing your missionary on a regular basis but in case you would like to send him/her letters or packages from time to time, may I explain your options in this regard and would you please share these with the rest of your family?
1. If your missionary gives you the actual street address, you may send things directly to him/her by
any carrier you choose. However, be aware that transfers occur every six weeks (with an occasional
variation of 5 weeks or 7 weeks) and if anything arrives for a missionary after he/she has been
transferred, there can be a significant delay (up to a month) before the item can be delivered.
Nevertheless, it will save the mission office considerable time and energy if you send your mail
directly to your missionary when you can safely do so. (Feel free to call the office and ask when
transfers are. It is best not to send anything to the apartment address for a week before transfers.)
2. You can always send letters and packages to the mission office and, since we know where each
missionary is all the time, we will forward the items to him/her. Mail that arrives in the morning goes
out in the afternoon. The only delay is when a weekend intervenes. However, be aware that UPS,
FedEx and U.S. Mail Parcel Post cannot be forwarded. Always, always send packages by First
Class or Priority Mail. (Incidentally, there is very little difference in price between 1st class and
Parcel Post.)
3. Do not write things like “Happy Birthday” on your packages. It is an open invitation for theft if
the box is left on the missionary’s doorstep by the postman. And if you want the package held at the
mission office regardless of how long it may take us to have it hand-carried to your missionary, send it
Parcel Post (which can’t be forwarded) or mark it: DO NOT FORWARD!
4. If you have questions or aren’t sure what is the best process to use, you may always call the office and
ask. The number here is 614-880-9960 and office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through
Friday.
5. Very important: ALWAYS put your missionary’s first name on mail. And if your name is a
common one [such as Smith], please put both first and middle names on the envelope or package.
You may be assured that we love our missionaries and do our best to help them in every possible way. This
is the work of the Lord, and we know you will be blessed as the parent(s) of an Elder or Sister who is serving
Him with heart, might, mind and strength.
