The Tree of Life

In his book, The Continuous Atonement, Brad Wilcox shares the following story of his brother-in-law, Bob Gunnell. The Gunnell family was living in Japan when Bob was 12. His father and another leader took the scouts hiking during a rainy weekend. On the way down from the hike they took a different route which became narrow and rocky. Bob grabbed a rock to steady himself and it broke loose. He fell 60 feet, about seven stories, and hit an incline. Then a falling rock hit him in the head, knocking him off the incline. His father Leroy had witnessed this and tried to go after him but slipped and fell 30 feet and was barely able to claw enough dirt and roots to stop himself. He recalled:
“When I looked in the direction Bob had fallen I could hardly believe my eyes. There he hung in midair draped like a towel over a single branch about the size of your arm that was growing out of the face of the cliff. He was unconscious and hung lifeless, perfectly folded on his stomach over that small limb – the only one in sight. I cried again to the Lord to help me get to him. There was still a 50 foot drop below him to nothing but rocks at the bottom.”
He moved as quickly as he could to get to Bob and finally crossed underneath him, then slowly climbed toward Bob, clinging to the cliff face. There was only one slippery rock the width of his boot to stand on and one handhold on a rock next to Bob. The boy’s head had several huge gashes in it and was dripping blood. Leroy prayed fervently; the situation seemed hopeless.
The other leader and boys ... made their way to the bottom to go get a rope. Leroy recalls, “It made me suffer to see Bobby hanging there still dripping blood. I couldn’t stand seeing him that way any longer so I reached out and took him by the seat of his pants and pulled him off the branch. With great effort I lifted him over into my lap and cradled him the best I could. I then laid my free hand on his head and gave him a blessing that he might live to reach the doctors.”
By the time the rope arrived it had been 45 minutes since the accident. Somehow, with supernatural strength, Leroy tied the rope single handedly and lowered Bob to help below. Later an ambulance arrived and took Bob to the hospital at Tachikawa Air Force Base . . . The next morning he was alive but in critical condition and still unconscious.
After about ten days the doctors told Bob’s mom that he could end up with no brain activity or at best, spend the rest of his life with severe limitations. Grieving, she found a private place, went in and locked the door and, in total dejection, prayed. She said, “At that moment I heard a man’s voice. At first it startled me because I was sure I was alone and had locked the door. The gentle voice said distinctly and clearly, ‘Let not your heart be troubled; neither let it be afraid. Peace I give unto you.’ ” The next
morning Bob began to stir. He stretched a bit, sat up and looked around. He saw his mom, smiled at her in and in a surprised voice said, “Well—Hi, Mom!” Ten days later they went home.
What were the chances of Bob’s falling directly over that one branch, the only one on the cliff? He could easily have missed it or landed unbalanced on his back or side, or at his rate of speed, he could have just crushed it on his way down. What were the chances that he would land perfectly balanced and that the branch would hold the whole time? Bob’s only hope was found in that one lone branch sent from God, strong enough to catch him, strong enough to hold him for as long as it took.
“Hopefully, most of us will never go through such a traumatic experience. Yet, in a way, everyone already has. We were born in to a fallen world. This mortal experience was for our good, but nonetheless full of peril. Jesus is that one lone branch that catches each of us…Only when we realize our complete dependence on Christ can we begin to feel the true gratitude He merits. Only as we realize the sure destruction awaiting us at the bottom of the cliff do we appreciate the one lone branch and the God who placed it there. ‘For there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved’ (Acts 4:12). Christ isn’t a shortcut or an easier way, He is the only way. There are no alternatives or substitute plans. The very fact that we are on this earth is evidence that we rejected Satan and had faith to follow Jesus from the beginning. Those without bodies are the ones who doubted. So sure were the rest of us that, unlike Bob, who fell off the cliff by accident, we jumped. We took a flying leap. We knew there would be one lone and redeeming branch. We knew we would be better off for having fallen. The knowledge of that singular lone branch gave us the confidence to choose to fall…One lone branch is more than enough because of the continuous power of the Atonement. Christ’s strength is perfect, His grace is sufficient, and His love is eternal.” (Brad Wilcox).
Sherrie Dew taught: “The Savior isn’t our last chance, He is our only chance. Our only chance to overcome self-doubt and catch a vision of who we may become. Our only chance to repent and have our sins washed clean. Our only chance to purify our hearts, subdue our weaknesses, and avoid the adversary. Our only chance to obtain redemption and exaltation. Our only chance to find peace and happiness in this life and eternal life in the world to come.”
We love you and pray that you will understand the love that our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have for you. You can do hard things, you already have. You have jumped off that cliff to mortality and the Savior has held you ever since.

The Revelation on the Priesthood

Like much of Europe, France and Belgium have large immigrant populations from their former African colonies. As a missionary serving in these areas during the early 1980s, I regularly taught immigrants from Ghana, Zaire, Ivory Coast, and Senegal. Since the official declaration concerning blacks and the priesthood was only a few years old at that time, we regularly confronted confusion regarding the extension of the priesthood to all worthy male members. As such, our Mis-sion President directed us to share the contents of this declaration with immigrant converts before baptism. The fear was that if we did not share this doctrine with a spirit of love before they were baptized, they might feel that we were being deliberately deceptive when it was later discovered. Since many of you labor in communities with vibrant African-American populations, I thought it would be helpful for you to have some background in case you were asked questions by a member or investigator.
Let me begin by acknowledging that sometimes well-intentioned members put forward their own ideas or opinions as to why there was a period of time when blacks could not hold the priesthood. The following is what Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles answered to a PBS reporter during a 2006 interview when asked about this policy. During the interview, Elder Holland referred to speculations – including those by some early church leaders – about the reasons why blacks could not hold the priesthood for a period of time as “folklore” that “must never be perpetuated”. He followed this with, “All I can say is, however well-intentioned the explanations were, I think almost all of these explana-tions were inadequate and/or wrong. It would have been advantageous to say nothing, to say we just don’t know. As with many religious matters, we must rely on faith. We simply don’t know why that policy was in place.”
Here is what we do know:
All worthy males may currently hold the priesthood.
There was a time (prior to 1978) when black members could not hold the priesthood.
The blessings of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost were always available to everyone.
We do not know why the priesthood was withheld from blacks prior to 1978.
What we DO know is that in 1978, the prophet Spencer W. Kimball was petitioning the Lord regarding this question and received direct revelation that all worthy male members should be extended the right to hold the priesthood. This revelation was subsequently ratified by the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and then sustained by the general membership of the Church at the September 1978 General Conference. The revelation has since been canonized as scripture and added to the end of the Doctrine and Covenants.
While some may consider that this period of exclusive access to the priesthood by non-blacks is evidence of discrimina-tion and thus puts in question the authenticity of the latter-day Church of Jesus Christ, I have found to the contrary that this policy and particularly the manner in which it was changed provide compelling evidence that this IS indeed the restored church of Jesus Christ. First, the Bible contains multiple examples of periods when priesthood use, and even church mem-bership, was exclusive. In Numbers 3:9, the Lord instructs Moses to appoint Aaron and his seed to the office of priest. Only the seed of Aaron could perform the ritual sacrifices for the Israelites - equivalent to modern-day priests who bless the bread and water at the Sacrament table. All other Levite men (not of Aaron’s lineage), ages 25-50 were appointed to serve with the priests and to care for the tabernacle and the utensils used in the sacrifices – equivalent to present-day dea-cons and teachers. For over 1,000 years no other Israelite or Gentile convert had the right to hold this Aaronic or Levitical priesthood. John the Baptist was a direct descendant of Aaron (Luke 1:5) and rightly acted in the office of a priest when he performed baptisms in the River Jordan. When Christ ordained his apostles and established his church, with the Sacra-ment replacing animal sacrifices, this exclusive practice of limiting the priesthood to Levites was discontinued. However, while in His mortal ministry, even the Savior was exclusive in his teaching. So it was that he said to the Gentile woman of Canaan who besought a miracle for her daughter, “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel” – though ultimately he healed her daughter because of her great faith (Matt. 15:22-28). For several years directly following Christ’s ascension into heaven, baptism into the Church of Jesus Christ was limited to Jews. It wasn’t until Peter was given the vision of the sheet with many beasts and commanded to “eat” that he came to know that God intended for the gospel to be extended to all of his children (Acts 10). This is the second “compelling evidence” that this is the restored Church of Je-sus Christ. Peter was praying to God when he received the revelation that baptism should be extended to non-Jews and that is EXACTLY what Spencer W. Kimball was doing when he received his revelation from God that the priesthood should be extended to all worthy male members. So, though to some this policy and its revocation in 1978 may be unset-tling –for me they provide additional evidence that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the restored Church of Jesus Christ.
Elders and Sisters, as representatives of Jesus Christ, when you are asked about this subject you can share the facts out-lined above and then quickly follow with your testimony that God has restored His Church on the earth and that it is led by a prophet who receives direct revelation from Jesus Christ, as did Peter. I know these things to be true and bear testimony of this in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

The Time Shall Come

In 1834 at a priesthood meeting in Kirtland, the Prophet Joseph said in part: “. . . It is only a little handful of Priest-hood you see here tonight, but this Church will fill North and South America—it will fill the world.”
These prophecies about filling the world . . . Preposter-ous? Perhaps. Unlikely? Undoubtedly. Impossible? Em-phatically no. It is happening before our eyes.
President Gordon B. Hinckley observed: “It was said that at one time the sun never set on the British Empire. That empire has now been diminished. But it is true that the sun never sets on this work of the Lord as it is touching the lives of people across the earth.
And this is only the beginning. We have scarcely scratched the surface . . . Our work knows no boundaries. . ”
I stand in awe as this work moves forward miraculously. Indeed the time has come “when the knowledge of a Sav-ior . . . Spreads throughout every nation, kindred, tongue and people.” I bear testimony of Him, the Savior of all mankind, and of this work, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen. En nuestra misión, la noche de hogar ha sido una fuente de no solo encontrar personas para enseñar sino también de ayudar a las personas de progresar en el evan-gelio.
Bajo de la sección "La Importancia de los Miembros," el Profeta Gordon B. Hinckley dijo "muchos de entre nosotros consideran que la obra misional es simplemente repartir folletos. TIPS on TWISTERS (or “What to do when the tornado sirens start.”)

September is usually tornado weather, but as you know, parts of the Mission experienced one in March. These notes are to help you know what to do if ever a tornado comes near you and your companion.
The following information is taken from “Tornado Safety” by Roger Edwards of the Storm Protection Center in Norman, Oklahoma, published online under “Online Tor-nado FAQs).
Know the signs of a tornado: Weather forecasting science is not perfect and some tornadoes do occur without a tor-nado warning. There is no substitute for staying alert to the sky. Besides an obviously visible tornado, here are some things to look and listen for:
 Strong, persistent rotation in the cloud base.
 Whirling dust or debris on the ground under a cloud base (tornadoes sometimes have no funnel!)
 Hail or heavy rain followed by either dead calm or a fast, intense wind shift. Many tornadoes are wrapped in heavy precipitation and can’t be seen.
 Day or night—a loud, continuous roar or ruble, which doesn’t fade in a few seconds like thunder.
 Night—small, bright, blue-green to white flashes at ground level near a thunderstorm (as opposed to silvery lightning up in the clouds). These mean power lines are being snapped by a very strong wind, maybe a tornado.
 Night—persistent lowering from the cloud base, illu-minated or silhouetted by lightning—especially if it is on the ground or there is a blue-green-white power flash underneath.
What to do . . .
In a house with no basement or an apartment: Avoid windows. Go to the lowest floor, small center room (like a bathroom or closet), under a stairwell, or in an interior hall-way with no windows. Crouch as low as possible to the
floor, facing down, and cover your head with your hands. A bathtub may offer a shell of partial protection. Even in an interior room, you should cover yourself with some sort of
thick padding (mattress, blankets, etc.) to protect against falling debris.
In a house with a basement: Avoid windows. Get in the basement and under some kind of sturdy protection (heavy table or workbench) or cover yourself with a mattress or sleeping bag. Know where very heavy objects rest on the
floor above (pianos, refrigerators, etc.) and do not situate yourself under them. They could fall down through a weak-ened floor.
In a car or truck: Vehicles are extremely dangerous in a tornado. If the tornado is visible, far away, and the traffic is light, you may be able to drive out of its path by moving at right angles to the tornado. Otherwise, park the car as quickly and safely as possible—out of the traffic lanes. (it is safer to get the car out of mud later if necessary than to cause a crash.) Get out and seek shelter in a sturdy building. If you are in open country, run to low ground away from any cars (which could roll over on you). Lie flat and face-down, protecting the back of your head with your arms. Avoid seeking shelter under bridges, which can create deadly traf-fic hazards while offering little protection against flying debris.
In a shopping mall or large store: Do not panic. Watch out for others. Move as quickly as possible to an interior bathroom, storage room, or other small enclosed area away from windows.
In a church: Do not panic. If possible, move quickly but in an orderly fashion to an interior bathroom or hallway, away from windows. Crouch face-down and protect your head with your arms. If there is no time to do that, get under the seats or pews, protecting your head with your arms or hands.
Elders & Sisters: please ask your bishop or branch president if there is a better place for you to ride out a tornado than your apartment (always assuming it is safe for you to drive to some other place). We want the bishops to know where you are and to give us their counsel on this. Post these instructions (and your Bishop's advice) in your apartment.

Testimonies of Departing Missionaries

Elders and Sisters —
My testimony is simple but it means a lot to me. I can’t imagine what our Savior Jesus Christ went through in the Garden of Gethsemane. It pains me to think of His suffer-ing. I am so grateful to Him! I know the Atonement is real and it does work. It only works when we are willing to sub-mit our will to our Heavenly Father and ask for forgiveness. I know we can be spiritually healed as we take advantage of the Atonement. I know the Book of Mormon is the word of God and that is what we are out here to share.
Just a few thoughts: work hard, be obedient, always support and listen to your mission leaders. And one last thing—have fun while you are doing it! I love you all and will miss serving the Lord full time with you great Elders and Sisters. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen. Elder Scott Robert Chisholm

I have a testimony of our Heavenly Father. He loves us deeply and is anxious to listen to our struggles, sorrows, and successes. I also have a firm testimony of my Master and Savior, Jesus Christ. His Atonement is life-changing and can heal the deepest wounds. He lives and loves us eter-nally. The Book of Mormon is true. I enjoy the spirit it brings as I read from its pages. It was translated by the Prophet Joseph Smith. I’m grateful for the sacrifices of the Prophet Joseph and many others in bringing this work for-ward. Being a missionary is awesome. Spreading the Mas-ter’s message will continue to be a part of my life. These things are true and I say them in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

There is no work more important than the one we are en-gaged in right now. We are saving souls—building the Lord’s kingdom. I have had no greater joy than bringing this gospel to people’s homes just as it was brought to me when I needed it. I was lost and confused but the missionar-ies brought a glimpse of Heaven, and I will forever be grate-ful for those two elders. My mission has brought amazing consequences. I have discovered that not only are we build-ing the kingdom but also the Lord is building us. Have fun, follow the Spirit and testify like no other. Just remember “when you work for the Lord, the pay ain’t much but the benefits are out of this world!” In Jesus’ name, Amen. Elder Michael Gonzalez

I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I have been called to “go to the Ohio” to declare His word and I have been “endowed with power from on high” to do so (3 Nephi 5:13; D&C 38:32). My heart is brim with joy! I know that Jesus Christ is the Only Begotten Son of our lov-ing Heavenly Father. Despite our weaknesses, He qualifies us to represent Him. I testify of the reality of His Atone-ment. It is for everyone, every time, for everything. I know that He, through Joseph Smith, restored His priesthood and the fullness of His gospel. The Book of Mormon stands as evidence. Elders and Sisters, “be fixed in your purpose” and remember “His arm is sufficient. Go forward, be faithful, His promise is sure.” In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

I feel like Nephi (2 Nephi 4:16-21): “My soul delighteth in the things of the Lord . . .my soul grieveth because of mine iniquities . . . Nevertheless, I know in whom I have trusted.” I also feel as Alma (Alma 29:10) when I see my brethren truly penitent. “Then do I remember what the Lord has done for me.” I am grateful to have been able to join my voice with prophets ancient and modern proclaiming that “redemption cometh in and through the Holy Mes-siah.” (PMG2)
It took coming all the way to Ohio to realize that the mis-sion field is wherever the Lord’s covenant disciples are. Brethren and Sisters, the work doesn’t end here. Let us, being directed by the keys of the priesthood, always pro-claim the gospel, for “it is a manifestation of our spiritual identity and heritage” (Elder David A. Bednar). In His holy name, even Jesus Christ, Amen.

Two years ago I was a shy, “non-confident” individual from Chubbuck, Idaho. After focusing all my efforts on Heavenly Father’s work, I can say now that I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I have been called by Him to declare His word (3 Nephi 5:13). Two years has changed my life!
I love the Ohio—this land has been to me like the waters of Mormon (Mosiah 18:30). Jesus Christ lives. His Atone-ment is the only way back to the Father. By strict obedience we can become like them! Joseph Smith is the prophet of the Restoration! The Book of Mormon is the word of God. Thomas S. Monson is the Lord’s prophet today. Jesus Christ stands at the head of this Church. I love you all and testify in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Thank you for your service in The Great Ohio Columbus Mission. Because of you, people can learn Jesus Christ’s gospel, be received unto baptism, and partake of true saving ordinances in the temple. I believe in the Book of Mormon and the doctrines presented in it. I know Jesus Christ is the literal Son of God and the Only Begotten Son in the flesh. He died and was resurrected just like his immortal Father was. He has received a fullness of glory, and we also will receive a fullness of glory as we participate in all the ordinances of the priesthood, just as the Savior did. All these things are great for us, but if we don’t share it with other people, we have in great measure wasted our life. These things are true. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Avoiding Preparation Day Injuries

Over the last six months, we have had a number of painful and even serious injuries from basketball and other sports activities. Some patterns have emerged as I have received your injury calls.
Here are three basic rules to remember:
Warm-up first!
Keep playing.
Keep it friendly, non-aggressive play.
Taking time off from missionary work – even though it is with permission - seems to make you more vulnerable to injury. Horseplay definitely leads to injuries. Also, most of you do not warm up before playing. Stretch your legs and arms first! A good warm up for even a couple of minutes will help prevent injury. Lastly, some of you have played competitive sports in school. Sometimes it is hard to keep from playing as if you were in the final minute of an important game. The guy who thinks this is just a little pick-up game for fun suddenly gets slammed. If you start feeling like this is the NCAA Final Four, slow down, take a deep breath and start having relaxing fun.
