The Harvester, January, 2013

Firmer in the Faith of Christ

President and Sister Nilsen

Drum roll please…WOW and CONGRATULATIONS! 501, that’s how many lives have been changed in The Great Ohio in 2012. That’s how many daughters and sons have been reborn in the waters of baptism in our mission field and that’s how many times the Savior’s redeeming love has been applied to the people we love, the people we have prayed and fasted for, taught, and served. Well done, OCM, you have set a mission record that will long be remembered! Thank you for your never-ending efforts to do the Savior’s work and to share the Plan of Happiness with everyone you meet. With the help of our Savior, you make a difference and it shows!

Using the momentum we have now, we are happy to announce that our scripture for this new year
(from our top 40 to memorize) is found in Helaman 3:35, “Nevertheless they did fast and pray oft, and did wax stronger and stronger in their humility, and firmer and firmer in the faith of Christ, unto the filling their souls with joy and consolation, yea, even to the purifying and the sanctification of their hearts, which sanctification cometh because of their yielding their hearts unto God.”

What does it take to be a missionary who grows stronger and stronger in humility and firmer and
firmer in the faith of Christ? For souls to be filled with joy and consolation, truly great missionaries obey with exactness. They keep morning schedules. They don't try to see what they can get away with. They work to see how much more they can do to be blessed with more faith which always results in success. The Lord is bound to that equation. Excellent missionaries plan to the half hour. They use their planners as a second brain and they work with the members as though their lives depended on it. "Fourth Type" missionaries give themselves over completely to the Savior; they bend their will, yield their hearts and say to God, "What do you want to do with me today? I will do it; anything you ask, like Nephi, I will go and do." Standout missionaries talk to everyone; they can open their mouths and speak words of love that invites others to want to be friends with them. They are so NOT of the world that they stand out in a crowd, not because of their clothes and tags but because of their countenances. They are strong spiritually and it shows. Most of all, their loyalty is to the Savior. They don't fear the world and they don't dilute their testimonies. Sanctified missionaries will only continue to grow after their missions. Years later their testimonies will weather the challenges of life and provide shelter to those who did not build upon the Rock.

One of the most beautiful and powerful parts of the mission experience is that even the weakest of
missionaries can become the strongest of all. The Lord gives us a year and a half or more to focus, full-
time, on connecting others to Him. We are part of the equation, but if we focus on ourselves we have a zero sum gain. When we loose ourselves, we find. When we put our trust in the Lord, we grow. The whole plan is brilliantly connected to bringing all of us home to our Father who gave us life and to our Brother who made it possible. We know that as we all continue to grow in the gospel, fast and pray oft, sanctify ourselves and love one another, the Lord will continue to bless us with success in building God’s kingdom in The Great Ohio.

Reborn in the New Year!

The new year always brings with it a new beginning, a new chance to start over, a brand new
start on life's challenges. Most people on this planet will resolve to do something new or try to
change something as the new year begins. Change for the better is always good. Renewal is al-
ways good. Trying again to get it right is always good. I heard a poem some time ago that has
stuck with me. I do not know who wrote it, but it rings true for those of us who have messed some
things up in 2012 and need to start some things over in 2013. It reads:

He came to my desk with quivering lips,
As the lesson was nearly done.
Dear Teacher, he said "I would like a new page,
For I have spoiled this one,”
I gave him a new one all clean and unspotted,
And into his eyes I smiled.
Said I, "do better this time my child."

I came to the throne with a quivering soul,
As the old year was nearly done.
Dear Father, I said, "I would like a new page,
For I have spoiled this one."
Then for the old page stained and blotted,
He gave me a new one all clean and unspotted,
And into my tearful soul he smiled,
Said He, "Do better this time my child."

It is never too late to start over. Every week in sacrament meeting we partake of the sacra-
ment and start over. As missionaries we tell people every day that they can start over, no matter
what they have done with their lives. If you feel you have not been as good of a missionary as you
should have been.... Start over! If you could have been a better companion.... Start over! If you
are not a good teacher of the gospel... Start over! The Lord loves it when we start over and try
again. His whole plan of Salvation is based on trying again after we fail. Elder Boyd K. Packer
said, " Life turns out to be a succession of trial and errors. Add "repent often" to your list of things
to do."

In Matthew 11: 28-30 when the Savior invites us to place our burdens upon him, he did not
mean just once... but daily, hourly even, if needed, so we may need to start over and place our bur-
dens again on Him. May we all start over and be continuously improving. And if we fail, start
over again.

METAS

Testimonies of Departing Missionaries

Elders & Sisters, My Friends! Oh, how I love the
Great Ohio! The friends made, the lives touched, but
most importantly, the souls saved….including mine. I
have had the spirit testify to me that Jesus Christ is my
Savior; that He suffered for me and all of us; and that
if we would take up our own “cross” and follow Him,
all of us might be saved! I am completely convinced
that in order for missionaries to reach their full poten-
tial and to be more like the only PERFECT missionary
to ever walk the earth, they must first go through some
of what He went through...to be mocked and scorned
as Him...to be cast out and rejected. Though only a
small token of what He suffered, I believe it is needed.
As I have gone through this, and have also helped oth-
ers through their gardens of Gethsemane, I have be-
come more like the Savior. Becoming a disciple of
Christ is NOT easy...but it wasn’t ever meant to be
easy...but “is so worth it”! Share your testimonies of
God and His Son; of The Book of Mormon and Joseph
Smith, The Prophet of God; of the Spirit that has
shown millions the truth of it all! This is the work of
all works! It is God’s work. Therefore, we are not
alone in it! I bear testimony that the Savior loves us,
that the Nilsens’ love us, and that I love you all.
Thank you for changing me for good! In the name of
Jesus the Christ, Amen.
Love, Elder Andrew Anderson

Elders and Sisters: I have a testimony of the teachings
of Christ. I have seen His words affect so many and
all of us. His atonement has made it possible for man-
kind to repent and return to our Heavenly Father. We
have this truth! The full Atonement of Jesus Christ
will be brought to our brothers and sisters. This work
is hard at times, but it will end with happiness and joy.
Continue serving the Lord and loving the people of the
OCM! I love all of my companions! They have
blessed my life in so many ways. Remember Felicity,
Elder Abbott! Jesus is the Christ, of this I testify in
the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Elder David Beaudoin

Instructions for one writing a departing testimony…..
In paragraph one, say something like….”hi”.
Hi, elders and sisters. Many of you I do know, many I
do not, and many are somewhere in between. But re-
gardless, I know each one of you as a representative of
Jesus Christ, Himself. He is our Master, and He has
chosen us to represent Him...to stand in His place, to
say and do if He, Himself, would say and do if He,
personally, was ministering among the very people to
whom He has sent Me. My voice is His voice, and my
acts are His acts. My words are His words, and my
doctrine is His doctrine, for I AM HIS AGENT! Do
we realize the epic and momentous propotions that
these short sentences imply? Do we realize we pos-
sess the very power of God, Himself, that He has
granted to us? Do we use it? Do we have POWER,
along with the Authority? My testimony is this...I
know we have the restored Church of Jesus Christ
here again, and we are a part of it! Regardless of the
ceaseless opposition to the Book of Mormon, still it
stands. And still my testimony stands. If I could
leave you with one plea, it would be to never, ever,
ever forget who you are! In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen
Elder Jonathan Moore Brooks

What a great privilege it is to serve the Lord. These
two years have been great! I know that God lives, that
Jesus Christ is His son. I know that Joseph Smith was
a prophet. Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ did in
reality speak to him. This work is inspired of God. I
have learned much. It means so much to me having
been able to serve as a full-time missionary for two
years. I wouldn’t take it back for the world! The
things that I have learned will bless me for the rest of
my life. The plan of salvation is real. God has a plan
for each and everyone of us. I know the Book of Mor-
mon is true. I love my Savior, Jesus Christ, and I love
all of you. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Elder Jonathan Crawford

What manna do we have? The Gospel of Jesus Christ!
How it has become sweet to me! Joy has been found
as I have taught those that have been prepared. The
Lord has blessed me greatly as I have devoted time
and attention to serving the Lord. This manna has
grown to be happiness, a greater faith in Christ, and a
knowledge of the restoration. I know Joseph Smith to
be the prophet of the restoration. He saw God the Fa-
ther and Jesus Christ! The spirit has born witness to
me many times as I have shared the first vision of Jo-
seph Smith. Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer.
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only
begotten Son…” John 3:16. The Father loves all! He
hopes that all may enjoy the sweet manna He has
given us. May we all work diligently so that Holy
manna may be showered all around! These things I
say, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Elder Austin Ipson

My personal testimony of this gospel is that the Sav-
ior, Jesus Christ, and His infinite atonement is very
real. I know that each and everyone of us has been
called to the work in this portion of His vineyard at
this specific time. The Great Ohio and even the sover-
eign nation of Kentucky has been my home for these
amazing past two years. The time is far spent. Let’s
sound forth the trumpet and let there be no delay.
These things I testify in the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.
Elder Dallas Nathan Gardner

Elders & Sisters of the Great OCM, What a wonderful
thing called missionary service, where we “Gather
round the standard bearer...While we’re battling for
the truth.” The truth of this gospel!!! I love my Sav-
ior, He only is my rock and my salvation...He is my
salvation! What an opportunity to help others build
upon the rock!! “We a war ‘gainst sin are waging;
We’re contenting for the right!” (Hymn 258) I know
that if we put our trust in the Lord, that all things that
are part of this worthy cause will be accomplished. I
bear witness that the Book of Mormon is the word of
God, that Joseph Smith translated it by the power of
God, that he also saw God the Father and His Son,
Jesus Christ, in that grove whilst in supplication to the
Father. I know that Jesus is the Christ. HE LIVES!
He loves every single one of us! Onward Christ’s sol-
diers, on to victory! For this is our fate, our duty, our
privilege, our call to help the captain of our souls save
his children!! Make the best of it.
Love, Elder Maughan

My dear brothers and sisters, it has been my pleasure
and blessing to serve with and amongst so many of
you in working to fulfill our sacred commission over
these past two years. I plead and pray that those
called to this sacred part of the vineyard, The Great
Ohio, may continue to be the excellent, sharpened
tools in the Lord’s hands that we’ve prepared our-
selves to be. As YOU continue forth with focused
efforts, I know you will be the great assist required in
bringing many heavenly siblings back to the Father.
Now, because of your great goals and desires, the ad-
versary will try and brew up a perfect storm of doubt
and dismay to hold you back from your full potential.
These roadblocks may consist of peer pressure, hid-
den daggers, and other obstacles that can be as simple
as turnstiles that just won’t turn. But, as we rely on
the Lord and the golden gun He has given us, The
Book of Mormon, we WILL come out on top! What
else can I say about the OCM. It is the place to be!!
Continue to live strong, work efficiently, and have fun
doing it. I close this testimony with two simple
phrases of encouragement: the first being,”stay classy
Ohio!”, and the second, “I know my Savior lives!”, in
His holy name, Amen.
Elder Parker “Og-dog” Ogden

The past two years have been full of experiences that
have caused me to grow and learn more than I ever
thought I would in such a short period of time. I’ve
experienced good times, and I’ve also had some hard
times, but I wouldn’t trade my time as a missionary
for anything! It’s been incredible to see how the gos-
pel has helped and changed the lives of the people I’ve
been able to teach. I’ve been able to see some of those
changes in my own life as well. I truly am a different
person because of my mission, and I know I’ve
changed for the better! I’ve been able to develop my
own personal testimony and see it grow. I’ve made
lifelong friends. I even learned how to play a hymn or
two on the piano. Missions are the best! I know that
the Gospel we share is true. I know that God is our
Father, that He truly loves each of us and that He has
provided a way for us to return to Him. I know that
Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and that the Book
of Mormon is true...I love that book! I know that Je-
sus is the Christ, the great I AM, and that each of us
can change, become better and ultimately be saved
through His atonement. I know it has definitely
changed me! I’m so grateful for the opportunity I’ve
had to serve as a missionary in His church! I’m grate-
ful to all of the Elders and Sisters I’ve been able to
serve with. It’s been a lot of fun! This mission is full
of great missionaries and even though I’m sailing
away, I know the OCM will carry on without me and
make it happen! Remember, no matter who or where
you are, it’s never too late to make a difference. I love
all of you, and say these things in the name of Jesus
Christ, Amen.
Elder Calvin John Olson

Elders and Sisters, I am so grateful for this wonderful
opportunity I have had to be able to serve along side
you in this, The Great Ohio Columbus Mission! My
knowledge, desire and faith has grown so much in the
time that I have been able to take part in this great
work of saving souls. I want all to know that I know
that Jesus is the Christ. I love my Savior and Re-
deemer and Master. He has helped me through trials
and tribulation, hardships and heartaches. I know that
His church is established, full force, on this earth to-
day! I know the power of the Priesthood is real. It
works. It will wrought miracles. I know that a young
man, Joseph Smith, saw God the Father and His Son
Jesus Christ and that through him, They would bring
back everlasting peace and happiness. The Book of
Mormon is proof and a witness of this. I know there is
a prophet and apostles that lead and guide us today
just as in times of old. I commend and appreciate
your dedication, faith, and hard work. Keep on
keepin’ on, y’all
Elder Jacob Michael Parry

It has been great serving with all of you the past two
years. I know that Joseph Smith is a prophet of God
and that he did restore Christ’s church on the earth. I
know that the Book of Mormon contains the fullness
of the gospel. I know that Christ atoned for our sins,
if we will humble ourselves and repent. Well every-
one, work hard and when things get tough, spur up! In
the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Elder Brayden Ottley

It’s easy for me to say, “I know my Redeemer lives.”
He loves me, and He loves the people of Ohio. I’ll
admit, there have been times when I have felt like I
am in the wrong place because it seems like my efforts
are in vain. However, I have come to know that I
have been selected as a personal representative of the
Lord, Jesus Christ and that He has chosen me to stand
in His place, to do His work here in the Ohio. I have a
firm testimony of love. As I have grown on my mis-
sion, I have come to recognize the Savior’s great love
for me. I have felt that love as I have shared His gos-
pel. I feel my capacity to love, grow as I feel His love
working through me. Le quiero a toda mi familia
hispana aquí en el Ohio, tanto los miembros &
compañeros, como las personas que he ensenado. En
el Nombre de Jesucristo, Amen.
Elder Brandon Z. Ragan

Ps. Quiero que trabajes duro hijo mío. Te Quiero!

Elders and Sisters, I know the church is true. I am
joyful for the opportunity I have had to serve in the
Ohio. The Book of Mormon is so powerful when ac-
companied with the spirit. It is the power to change
lives as it has mine! It’s the best. You stay classy and
thanks for stopping by!
Elder Justin Timothy Rassmussen

Ye receive no witness until after the trial of your
faith.” I know that miracles do come after you do
your very best and trust in the Lord. We are all here
for a reason and there is something that only we can
do. I know that when we do the hard things and are
obedient, we become who the Lord knows we can be-
come. I know that The Book of Mormon is the word
of God and that we draw closer to our Savior and our
Heavenly Father as we read and apply it in our lives. I
know that the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored
through the prophet Joseph Smith and that Heavenly
Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him in answer to
his prayer. I know that Heavenly Father loves each of
us so much and wants the best for us. I know that we
have been called of God to help our brothers and sister
to receive all the blessings that are available to them
through the knowledge of the restored gospel. I know
this to be true with all my heart. In the name of Jesus
Christ, Amen.
Sister Jesa Lyn Richardson

Elders and Sisters of The Great OCM!! I have been
extremely blessed with the opportunity to be out here
with all of you. The testimony I get to share has been
built up to the point where I never dreamed it could
be! I know the Book of Mormon is true! Joseph
Smith is a true Prophet of the Lord. I am so grateful
for all the sacrifices he made in order for all of us to
be where we are at right now. The Savior is truly the
Redeemer, the great I AM, the Prince of Peace, the
Lamb of God, and the literal Son of our eternal Father
in Heaven; He is Jesus The Christ. I have been called
of Him and I will always serve Him. “The die has
been cast, I have stepped over the line. The decision
has been made! I am a disciple of Jesus Christ.” The
spirit has manifested these things to me and I declare
these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Elder Roberto Unzaga

I know that I am truly blessed to have served, despite
my weakness, in the Great Ohio. My heart has been
touched and changed by the love and charity that has
grown in it for all of the amazing people I have been
so fortunate to serve and labor with. My faith and tes-
timony have grown and been solidified in this gospel
and priesthood that was restored through Joseph
Smith; in this church that is led by Thomas S. Mon-
son, a living prophet; and in The Book of Mormon
which is true scripture and has answered the questions
of my soul. I know that my Savior lives and loves me,
and that He has guided me through every moment of
this experience. I am coming out of my mission re-
fined by my personal trials and the trials of others as
they have found salvation and entered through the gate
to eternal life. I am determined to continue to live this
gospel and to always sound forth the trumpet!
Sister Makenzie Whitecar

What a marvelous privilege it has been to serve beside
you! What a miraculous year we’ve had! The Lord
has blessed us greatly. My testimony is that our sSav-
ior lives! This is indeed His wonderful work and what
a blessing it has been to participate in it. Salvation
and exaltation, the glory of the Father and all the op-
portunities and blessings He so anxiously desires to
bestow upon us, can only be realized through the con-
ditions of repentance. (Hel 5:12) We have been foror-
dained to be HERE, in the Great Ohio to bring our
brethren to a knowledge of this truth “which bringeth
unto the power of the Redeemer, unto the salvation of
their souls.” What a sacred honor! “Shall we not go
on in so great a cause?!” Turn your heart over to the
Lord, let Him change you and you will see wonders in
your life! I have in mine. Know that you are a right-
eous generation, and that all those who have gone be-
fore you, love and support you! In the name of Jesus
Christ, Amen.
Elder Joshua Wilson

You Tell on Yourself

You tell on yourself by the friends you seek,
By the very manner in which you speak,
By the way you employ your leisure time,
By the use you make of dollar and dime.

You tell what you are by the things you wear,
By the spirit in which your burdens you bear;
By the kind of things at which you laugh,
By the record you play on the phonograph.

You tell what you are by the way you walk,
By the things in which you delight to talk,
By the manner in which you bear defeat,
By so simple a thing as how you eat.

By the books you choose from the well-filled shelf,
In these ways, and more, you tell on yourself.
